Dubai Basketball Chairman and Co-Founder, Abdulla Saeed Juma Al Naboodah joined the EuroInsiders podcast to discuss the journey of building the city’s first-ever sports franchise, highlighting its sporting ambitions and the commitment to creating a lasting legacy for Dubai.

Dubai Basketball’s Chairman shared his vision for the franchise on the EuroInsiders podcast, with a clear ambition: to compete consistently among Europe’s best while building a sustainable project that becomes part of every household in Dubai.

The idea dates back to 2016, when Dejan Kamenjašević, Dubai Basketball’s President and General Manager, proposed establishing a Dubai-based team to compete in Europe. Discussions with EuroLeague, a visit to the Belgrade Final Four and meetings with European clubs helped shape the roadmap: joining the ABA League, entering the EuroLeague and establishing a lasting presence in European basketball.

The Chairman highlighted Kamenjašević’s dedication and persistence in bringing that vision to life.

Ambition built on stability

“Our aim is to make Dubai Basketball one of Europe’s leading teams,” the Chairman explained. “We want to reach the playoffs and challenge for a place at the Final Four, while maintaining a consistent level across seasons.”

The ABA League title arrived sooner than he expected, following a semifinal appearance in the team’s first season. With fine margins often deciding the biggest games, the priority is to build a team capable of regularly reaching the decisive stages.

That ambition must be supported by good management, clear budgets and patience. The Chairman stressed that attracting talent is one part of a wider commitment to building strong structures and developing players. “I intend to keep investing until the project becomes sustainable and can continue beyond my involvement,” he said.

Developing talent and leaving a legacy

Youth development is central to that vision. With more than 500 players in the club’s academy, Dubai Basketball aims to create opportunities for young talent and develop local role models. “One of my ambitions is to see an Emirati player progress from our academy to the first team,” the Chairman explained.

Carrying Dubai’s name internationally also brings a responsibility to contribute to its basketball community. The ambition is for the club to become part of everyday life in the city, connecting with its diverse population and giving young players a pathway to follow.

Drawing a comparison with construction, the Chairman described his desire to “create something tangible that remains as a legacy”. For Dubai Basketball, that means building a competitive team, creating opportunities for future generations and establishing a team that belongs to the city.
